پژوهشگران در این مطالعه، در پی آن بودند كه دریابند آیا نوزادان نارس می‌توانند زودتر تغذیه با شیر را آغاز كنند و به این ترتیب سریعتر به وزنی مناسب دست یابند یا خیر.

این پژوهش با همكاری واحد ملی اپیدمولوژی بارداری در دانشگاه آكسفورد و با مشاركت 54 بیمارستان در انگلیس و ایرلند انجام شده است.

تقریبا نیمی از كودكان مورد آزمایش مشكلات تنفسی داشتند، البته نوزادان بسیار بیمار در این تحقیق بررسی نشدند.

در این تحقیق به نیمی از نوزادان یك روز پس از تولدشان شیر داده شد و بقیه در شش روزگی تغذیه با شیر را آغاز كردند.سه چهارم نوزادان به جای شیر خشك كمكی با شیر مادر تغذیه كردند.

نوزادانی كه از روز دوم شیر خوردن را آغاز كرده بودند زودتر به تغذیه كامل - به معنی این كه نوزاد 72 ساعت با خوردن شیر تغذیه كند - رسیدند.

به طور میانگین نوزادانی كه در دو روزگی شیر خوردن را آغاز كرده بودند، 18 روز پس از تولد كاملا از طریق شیر تغذیه می‌شدند. در حالی كه آنهایی كه از روز ششم شیر را شروع كرده بودند در روز بیست و یكم به مرحله تغذیه كامل ‌رسیدند.

محققان تحت سرپرستی دكتر' آلیسون لیف ' و پروفسور 'پیتر بروكلهورست ' دریافتند آغاز تغذیه با شیر در 24 تا 48 ساعت پس از تولد می‌تواند برای نوزاد مفید باشد.

'بروكلهورست ' كه مدیر موسسه سلامت زنان در دانشگاه لندن است، در این مورد گفت: ظاهرا تغذیه زودهنگام برای این نوزادان تحت خطر، مفید است.
